In a nutshell your "Hit Factor" is equal to your points per second on the stage. If you take your total points shot and then divide that by the time you got on the stage, you will have your hit factor.
For example, if your stage time is 18.26 seconds, and you managed to rack up 92 points, your hit factor can be calculated by doing the following formula:
92 points / 18.26 seconds = 5.03833 Hit Factor
At the end of the match all of the scores will be combined for your division, and the highest hit factor (HF) will then be awarded 100% of the available points for the stage, which will go towards that shooters overall match points. Your match points will be based on the percentage that you received on the stage and will receive that percentage of the stage points going towards your total match points.
USPSA scoring isn't that easy to understand, so if you are still confused don't worry, many shooters are happy to help explain any scoring questions you may have.
